• Operator references: Two or three current references from drilling or completions superintendents at comparable operators.
• Equipment readiness: Inspection records, maintenance history, certifications and documented tool condition.
• Response performance: Actual after-hours dispatch times, delivery reliability and availability of backup equipment.
• Technical capability: Whether experienced personnel can recommend the correct tool and support the job when conditions change.
• Safety and quality: Incident history, applicable pressure-control documentation, insurance and operator qualification status.
• Commercial integrity: Transparent rental periods, repair charges, lost-in-hole terms and responsibility for equipment failures.

My starting point would be Doc's, Woolley Tool, Lucky Rental Tool and Nave Oil and Gas for fishing-oriented requirements, subject to basin fit and reference checks. For drilling BHA rentals or workstrings, I would build a separate shortlist because the technical and operational requirements are different.
